Temperature is something we deal with every day — checking the weather, cooking a meal, or reading a science textbook. But depending on where you live or what field you work in, you'll run into three different temperature scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. The Celsius scale (also called centigrade) was developed by Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius in 1742. It's built around the properties of water:

The Fahrenheit scale was created by German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724. Its reference points are less intuitive:
Fahrenheit's zero point was originally based on the temperature of a brine (salt and ice) mixture, and 96°F was meant to approximate human body temperature (later refined to 98.6°F). Despite the odd numbers, Fahrenheit offers finer granularity for everyday weather reporting, which is part of why it has stuck around in a few countries.
The Kelvin scale, introduced by Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) in 1848, is the absolute temperature scale used in science. Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit, Kelvin doesn't use "degrees" — a temperature is just written as, for example, "300 K," not "300°K."
Kelvin starts at absolute zero (0 K), the theoretical point at which all molecular motion stops. There are no negative numbers on the Kelvin scale. It shares the same increment size as Celsius, so a 1-degree change in Celsius equals a 1-unit change in Kelvin.

So while Celsius and Fahrenheit divide the world by country, Kelvin transcends that divide entirely — it's the scale scientists everywhere use, regardless of which scale their country uses at home.
Because Kelvin is an absolute scale anchored to absolute zero — the point where atoms and molecules have minimal thermal motion — there's no colder temperature possible, so the scale simply doesn't go below zero. Celsius and Fahrenheit, by contrast, are relative scales built around arbitrary reference points (water's freezing point, or a salt-brine mixture), so they can extend into negative numbers.
